Why are Lucidity GCs and HPLCs so inexpensive?

We’ve been doing a lot of travelling recently between attending conferences and trade shows and doing demo tours, and we get one question very frequently.  “Why are your systems so inexpensive?”  This question comes up because our systems are typically about half the price of traditional GCs and HPLCs, yet they have the same capability.  Our response has become, “Why are the other systems so expensive?”  But this question is worth a more detailed answer.  We can break it down into several key points.

1. We have the advantage of having designed the systems from the ground up in the last decade, which means we’re able to reimagine the design of well known analytical techniques with simplicity and durability in mind while using modern design techniques, materials, and electronics.
2. The 80-20 rule.  Design something that accomplishes what 80% of the market needs.  Attempting to accommodate everyone’s needs gets very cumbersome and expensive.  Most people are doing fairly mundane things with their GCs and HPLCs.  There has been a lot of very cool development, and there are some incredible high end solutions available to tackle the most extreme and cutting edge problems, but the majority of people are doing things that are fairly routine for these powerful analytical techniques, and they want robust tools to make sure the analysis is done the same way every time, over and over, with reliable results.
3. We build the same systems the same way every time instead of having to manufacture dozens or more variants on demand and then having to configure these different combinations of variants on site.
4. We have approached the design of our systems with a different mindset from the original design goals of traditional analytical systems.  Decades ago chromatography systems were designed as open modules that could be tweaked and configured by highly trained users for different purposes.  Our modern systems have been designed as dedicated, integrated analytical tools that can be used by a broader audience for very well understood applications.
