Software Developers Should Use the Products They Create

Software Developers Should Use the Products They Create

Do you ever feel like the software developer who designed the software that you are using never actually used their own product.  Well, here at Lucidity we feel the same way, which is why we made one of our software developers install our GC-FID using only their software and videos. We did this to give them first hand experience on what it was like to install a Lucidity GC-FID and walk a mile in our customers’ shoes.

So we took one from his comfort zone and put him to the test.  We grabbed Bobby, one of Lucidity’s software developers, and asked him to install and run the GC-FID using only the installation videos and software that come with every system.

We wanted to see if someone who has never done any chromatography before would be able to follow along with the videos and software to install a Lucidity GC-FID without external help in under 30 minutes.

Watching the videos, Bobby began by setting the GC-FID and GAS systems on the table and began the installation.  First up, connecting the GAS system to the GC-FID, connecting the gas lines and communications cables, both systems were then turned on.

Bobby continued through the videos and then added the autosampler to the GC-FID. Bobby fits the autosampler to the GC-FID with ease as the alignment is just fit the ring around the injection port.

Once the GC-FID is connected to the GAS system and the autosampler installed, Bobby then started the software and started a run. Entering in all of the run details was simple and intuitive. Bobby was able to start the run without any issues.  And believe it or not, our software engineer was able to successfully produce good chromatograms!

Not only does this exercise help ensure that our systems are easy to set up and run, but it also gives our software engineers customer perspective, which will help them to continue to make our software and our systems the easiest to use.

If you want to see firsthand how easy to use our software is, let us know, and we’d be happy to show you!
